Today Boswellia is used widely as incense and in makeup; however, it is also used to relieve bronchitis and laryngitis when used with steam inhalation. Recently though, it has been discovered that this herb contains certain substances called Boswellic acids, which are known to have anti-inflammatory properties, therefore, Boswellia is often suggested as a treatment for bursitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and tendonitis as well. Preliminary research shows that this herb may also protect cartilage from damage. Boswellia or Indian frankincense is an Ayurvedic herb that is used traditionally to support the treatment of arthritis, ulcerative colitis, sores, and asthma. The major components are boswellic acid and alpha-boswellic acid. Studies show that Boswellic acid is a potent 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor that has anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects. It is a very popular ingredient in high-end topical products and oral nutritional supplements. Research/Studies have shown that the Boswellic acids have an anti-inflammatory action. This action is much like the conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), used for many inflammatory conditions. As opposed to NSAIDS, long-term use of Boswellia does not lead to irritation or ulceration of the stomach. Research in India found that an extract of Boswellia was more beneficial, less toxic and more potent that the standard drug of choice for rheumatic disorders.
